Bring on the Clichés: "Trust Me" Episode 2
Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 9:21AM The reason last night’s episode seemed so long (what was it, three hours? four??) is that you knew every single thing that was going to happen after the first two scenes. By 10:13, I’d already seen the whole episode in my head—and still had a grueling 47 minutes to suffer through. I think next week we should try an experiment: Watch the first ten minutes, then pause your DVR and write down how you think the rest of the episode will play out. I think we’d get pretty close.
Not only did the Parade of Advertising Clichés continue (arrogant young creative eventually gets his comeuppance, client needs ideas five minutes from now, “Regular Joes” in focus groups point out an obvious flaw that none of the experienced ad pros noticed…) but the writers have already gone to the Big Book of Sitcom Plots and started stapling entire pages at a time into their script. Note to “Trust Me” writers: If you have to resort to “Characters Get Drunk and Need to be Bailed out of Jail” in your second episode, you probably don’t need to get a babysitter for Emmy night.
